Adam J. Sorkin

Adam J. Sorkin translates contemporary Romanian poetry. His work has won Poetry Society, Ioan Flora Foundation and Poesis Translation prizes, as well as support from the Fulbright, Rockefeller and Soros Foundations, the Academy of American Poets, Arts Council England, Romanian Cultural Institute, and the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts. Sorkin has published four translations of Romanian poets with Bloodaxe: Liliana Ursu’s The Sky Behind the Forest (translated with Ursu and Tess Gallagher), Ioana Ieronim’s The Triumph of the Water Witch (with Ieronim), Marin Sorescu’s The Bridge (with Lidia Vianu), which won the Corneliu M. Popescu Prize for European Poetry in Translation, and Mircea Dinescu’s The Barbarians' Return (with Lidia Vianu). His recent books include The Hunchbacks’ Bus by Nora Iuga (Bitter Oleander Press, translated with Diana Manole), Syllables of Flesh by Floarea ÈšuÈ›uianu (Plamen Press, with Irma Giannetti), and A Deafening Silence by Magda Cârneci (Shearsman Books, with Mădălina Bănucu and the author). Sorkin is Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Penn State University.
