FA Home’s exquisite new bed and table linen collection, ‘Gara Odyssey’, marries ancient artistry with contemporary elegance, breathing life into the ancient Parsi Gara embroidery tradition
Imagine a home imbued with a sense of history, and artistry. This is the vision behind ‘Gara Odyssey,’ a new collection of bed and table linen by FA Home, an emerging brand in the world of luxury home textiles that aims to breathe life back into the exquisite art form of Parsi Gara embroidery. Launched in 2023 by Chandrika Thatai, the design house, which draws inspiration from India’s rich heritage of craftsmanship, has carved a niche for its quality, authenticity and innovation.
The Parsi Gara embroidery tradition is known for its intricate floral and nature-inspired motifs. Its roots trace back to ancient Persia, where embroidery was a popular art form. The Zoroastrian Parsis, fleeing religious persecution in Persia, found refuge in India around the 8th century. They brought with them their cultural traditions, including a passion for embroidery. The term ‘Gara’ itself is believed to be derived from the Persian word ‘Geh,’ meaning a knot or stitch. Over time, the Parsis adapted their embroidery style to incorporate Indian motifs and aesthetics. The result was a unique fusion of Persian and Indian sensibilities, a testimony to the cultural exchange that occurred as the Parsis integrated into Indian society. Parsi Gara became a part of Parsi identity; it often adorns their traditional garments, especially sarees.

The Parsi Gara motifs are made using fine silk threads in a palette of colours. Common motifs include the kors (poppy), jiva (paisley), chakla (circle), and chidiya (bird), each symbolizing aspects of nature and Parsi beliefs. The embroidery is traditionally done on silk or georgette fabrics, with the stitches creating a raised texture that adds depth and dimension to the artwork. The attention to detail is remarkable. Its time-intensive nature and the availability of cheaper, machine-made alternatives have led to a decline in its production. Also, the dwindling Parsi population and the lack of younger generations taking up the craft have made Parsi Gara a dying art.

A tribute to this ancient tradition and an attempt to revive it, FA Home’s ‘Gara Odyssey’ collection is handcrafted using temperature-friendly fabrics like linen, cotton, and cotton satin. The inclusion of satin adds a touch of opulence, enhancing the collection’s overall allure. The collection recognizes the need for a bridge between heritage and modern sensibilities. This bridge is built upon nature’s enduring inspiration. The collection features Chinese motifs like the phoenix, peonies, and lotus. These aren’t mere embellishments; they’re symbols of renewal, prosperity, and purity, woven into the very fabric of your home.
