The Poetry Issue 2023: Overwatering My Plant

Brought you home to reap in my garden,
A sublime flower like none other to prevail.
Blocked any shadows cast upon your leaves,
Your heart beating from the watering can I held.

The break of day came with your image in mind,
Bedtime thoughts also anchored on your progress to bloom.
No credit to nutrients for the purity of your soil,
Benevolence and care were the magical ingredients.

Indebted to fate for my backyard being your home,
Too fooled to notice you were looking for another.
Even when seeing you gaze the other side of the fence,
My hands could not let go of the running hose.

Tried clasping your roots to keep you mine forever,
Then becoming victim of a dry spell.
Continued bleeding until my skin was pallor to the eye,
Left parched because I was unsure when to stop giving.
