Christopher Nolan’s largest production yet transforms Homer’s ancient masterpiece into one of Hollywood’s most anticipated films of 2026
With Matt Damon as Odysseus, a stellar ensemble cast, a record-breaking IMAX rollout and Nolan’s largest production to date, The Odyssey promises to fuse classical literature with blockbuster filmmaking on an unprecedented scale
Once again, the world is about to witness something spectacular from Hollywood as the renowned film director, Christopher Nolan, known for his blockbusters, is back with yet another masterpiece, The Odyssey. He is the same director who has been leaving the world of cinema awestruck with his complex, stunning, and riveting films like Inception (2010), The Dark Knight (2008), Tenet (2020), Interstellar (2014), and Oppenheimer (2023), and has several awards like the BAFTA Award, Empire Award, Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Honorary César, Saturn Award, and Bram Stoker Award in different categories to his credit.
The Odyssey, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and produced by him and his wife, Emma Thomas, through their production company, Syncopy, is an epic fantasy action film based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem, The Odyssey. Starring actors like Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, and his wife Penelope, respectively, and Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron as part of the ensemble cast, this film is set to be released on July 17, 2026.
The estimated budget of the film is $250 million, which is being said to be among the most expensive projects of Nolan’s career. The film, being the first to be shot entirely on IMAX’s 70 mm film cameras, had its cinematography done by Hoyte van Hoytema. It premiered at the Empire Leicester Square in London on July 6, 2026.
The Odyssey is another cinematic production where two forms of art, i.e., literature and cinema, have been fused together to produce something that is “foundational,” as stated by Nolan and Thomas, incorporating elements of the horror, mystery, romance, and thriller genres. The film follows the story of the long, destructive journey of Odysseus, the ancient Greek king of Ithaca, and his fleet back home to his wife, Penelope, after the ten-year Trojan War. It features the various perilous obstacles they encounter on their journey, including monstrous traps, divine wrath, and their own fatal mistakes, which are endured by Odysseus and his crew, all of whom meet their fate and eventually perish, apart from Odysseus himself.
Shot entirely on IMAX 70 mm cameras, Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey reimagines the legendary Greek epic with breathtaking scale and realism.
Weaving together universal themes such as fate, free will, divine intervention, justice, self-restraint, memory, grief, glory, and honour, it chronicles Odysseus’ encounters with mythical beings such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the nymph Calypso. In his attempt to reunite with his wife, Penelope, who is being aggressively courted by 108 arrogant suitors but is finally saved by Odysseus in the guise of a beggar, with the help of his son, Telemachus, and the goddess Athena, he reclaims the throne of Ithaca after all the suitors are eventually slaughtered.
Nolan, who started writing the script in March 2024, has been very faithful to Homer’s text except for a few alterations, such as giving more screen time to Odysseus’ faithful dog, Argos, and adding more interactions between Odysseus and Telemachus, among others. Starting from the production design and costumes to accents, dialogues, and casting choices, every aspect of this film has been critically discussed for its historical accuracy and fidelity to the source material and its setting.
The Odyssey has been described by Nolan as the most challenging and largest-scale production of his career. He had previously attempted to direct the film Troy (2004), an adaptation of Homer’s other great epic, the Iliad, developed by Wolfgang Petersen for Warner Bros. Pictures, but instead went on to make Batman Begins in 2005 when Petersen chose to direct Troy instead of a planned Batman vs. Superman film. According to Nolan, he was “in a little over his head” about Troy, but now that he has worked on several large-scale productions over the past 20 years, he finds himself ready enough to adapt the “sweeping story” of The Odyssey.
Breaking the long-standing gap in the history of cinema, The Odyssey is going to be the first large-scale adaptation of The Odyssey by a major Hollywood studio. Nolan was uncertain about his next project after his film Oppenheimer (2023), which had been a huge success and had won him several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, in March 2024. However, according to Nolan and his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, the success of this film paved the way for their next project, providing them with the opportunity to explore new creative possibilities.
After studying The Odyssey deeply and reading its translations closely, including those by classicists Emily Wilson, E. V. Rieu, and Robert Fagles, Nolan embarked on the journey of writing the script for its adaptation in a non-linear fashion. By October 2024, it had been revealed that he was developing his next film at Universal Pictures, and the official announcement was made in December 2024 by the studio, which described the film as a “mythic action epic.” The Greek mythology-inspired films that Nolan watched while growing up, especially the works of animator and special effects artist Ray Harryhausen, served as an inspiration for this project.
In spite of all the praise and awe that it has inspired, the film is not without its share of manufactured internet controversies and criticism regarding its diverse casting choices for a setting based on ancient Greece
The lead roles in this film are played by actors like Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland, the former three of whom have already collaborated with the filmmaker on films like Oppenheimer, Tenet, The Dark Knight Rises, and Interstellar. Moreover, the film also features Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron in supporting roles.
The major shooting took place between February 25 and August 5, 2025, wrapping up in 91 days, nine days ahead of schedule. The six primary locations across which the shooting was carried out were Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, Scotland, and the United States. Some of the filming also took place in Malta for Calypso’s cave.
If we talk about the visual style and atmospheric tone of this film, Nolan has said they were inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev (1966) and Akira Kurosawa’s Ran (1985). The director has combined the fantastical elements of The Odyssey with his “tactile realism” in order to bring a realistic touch while depicting the presence and interventions of the gods through natural phenomena that were once considered “supernatural” during the time period in which the story is set.
Ludwig Göransson, a Swedish musician and composer who has previously worked with Nolan on Tenet and Oppenheimer, started composing the musical score for the film by April 2025. Instead of featuring an orchestra, commonly associated with sword-and-sandal films, Nolan suggested using the sound of the lyre and the aulos, both of which were employed by Göransson along with bronze instruments because of the Bronze Age setting. The vocals for the score have been contributed by musician James Blake. The soundtrack will be released digitally by Universal’s Black Lot Music label on the same date as the release of the film: July 17.
The marketing of this film is being done on a monumental scale, where the experience has been cinematic and the enthusiasm has matched that of a major cultural event. Instead of relying on modern social media influencer screenings, Universal Pictures has chosen to roll out the film through press junkets and trusted film journalists. The promotional materials have been designed in such a way that they attract audiences back to traditional theatres. The primary focus of the marketing campaign has been the massive number of views received by the trailer. The initial trailer gathered about 121.4 million views in its first 24 hours of release.
The film is being marketed internationally on such a huge level that Nolan extended his premiere tour to Mumbai, hosting his first-ever official film launch there. This event was successful in creating a global fan base, prompting strong demand for the advance sale of IMAX tickets. The film is being received incredibly well even before its release. Some film outlets have already declared it one of Nolan’s “absolute best” and a “generational cinematic event.” Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson are already earning special praise for their portrayals of King Odysseus and the villainous Antinous, respectively.
Tickets for select opening weekend IMAX 70 mm screenings were made available one year before the release of the film, on 17 July 2025, and many of these showings sold out within the first 12 hours of going on sale, including those in half of the 22 theatres available in the United States, generating about $1.5 million. A move that was called unprecedented by major film distributors proved to be immensely successful, and it earned the label of “the most anticipated” film of 2026 by IMDb, while also being predicted by Variety to be the highest-grossing film of the year.
In spite of all the praise and awe that it has inspired, the film is not without its share of manufactured internet controversies and criticism regarding its diverse casting choices for a setting based on ancient Greece, which reveals the deeply rooted racism that still persists among people. All this speculation and debate has been dismissed by the director, Christopher Nolan, as irrelevant because it comes before the film's release and without audiences having seen the sincerity of the adaptation.
So, it is time that we fasten our seat belts and get ready for one of the most exciting and adventurous rides in cinema because, after all, it is Christopher Nolan, a grand story, and a team of remarkable actors coming together. Get your tickets, if you have not already, and judge the artistry, magnificence, and accuracy of the film for yourself.
